This book draws you in, invites you into it's livingroom, hands you a drink and welcomes you into the fold.Often, writers who put more emphasis on grammtical gymnastics and pretense: deliver a distant perspective to their story and places the reader as a spectator in the stands; looking down onto the stage from the nose-bleed seats. Binaculars required, if you want to get a closer look. This is where Karen Diaz's strength lies. Her skill with character dialogue puts you in the room, holding a drink and feeling a part of the conversations, actions and events occuring in the story. You feel like you should chime in with an opinion or thought, on the topic or matters being discussed. Or even duck behind the couch to avoid a vase or sword soon to be hurled across the room, lol.It feels real, not forced. Vampires and associated vampire associated culture aside, it feels like dialogue you've heard your family and friends discuss and agrue with...... a few thousand times, right in your presence. Not so much the topic of discussion, but the way it's discussed. The vernacular. The syntax. It's real world, down home talking. Some writers choose story over character development. others, Character development over story. But Karen Diaz, as with all good writers: does both very well. The story is involving, entertaining and grabs you. It takes a few pages to completely get it's eager fingers around you. But when it does, you're pulled in and you don't want it to let go. Wonderfully fleshed out characters, where you often find more humanity, more emotion....more humans condition; then you expected.Who would have thought vampires could be so wonderfully conflicted and flawed? So much so that you find yourself caring about the characters and wanting to fight for them and care for them; in their time of tragic need. Despite their obvious flaws and missteps.A well done debut from Karen Diaz. Let's hope there's more to come from this talented, creative writer.
